Wood roofing on homes used to be very common in the United States.  And for good reason; they are both durable and lasting. Shake Shingles or Wood Shingles can be found in two different styles - machine sawn or hand split.  The machine sawn variety tend to be more affordable and common.

Wood shingles and shakes are a local Dallas Fort Worth favorite because of how they age. They appear even more beautiful over time. Shingles, the thinner of the two, has a propensity to easily damage in hail storms, which you can imagine would be a problem in metroplex area. Shakes are thicker and can last up to 25 years without showing significant hail damage.
